A song from the point of view of one of the men who walked the Emmaus Road alongside a stranger. In dining with him they recognised him as Jesus.
lyrics
As we left the city gates the sun sank lower in the sky
And we wrapped our cloaks around our shoulders tight
And hearts were numb with grief as we turned our weary eyes
To the road, to be there before the night.
As we walked on through a land that all at once seemed strange and grey
with voices hushed, we talked of all we'd seen
And we talked of shattered dreams in the dying of the day
and we wept for all the things that might have been
Then suddenly in the twilight on the road with us was a stranger
And he greeted us upon our careworn way
And he asked us what we spoke of and we told him of our sorrow
Of the Lord, the cross, the dying of the day.
Then he spoke and his words opened the window in my soul
As on the road he told us of God's way
And as if the sun arose, chased away the fears and woes
A strange new hope was born into our hearts
In the dying of the day.
The evening came and still we talked as we reached the journey's end
and we turned to him and begged him there to stay
For the night was coming in and this stranger, now a friend
How we needed him in the dying of the day.
So we sat there in the warm as the logs burned in the fire
And we ate a meal together in that place.
Still we did not recognise the one who sat there by our side
Still we couldn't see the truth there in his face
Then suddenly in the silence as our meal together was ending
Then he took the bread and then we heard him say,
“Now this bread becomes my body and it has been broken for you
And I am with you in the dying of the day.”
Then I knew, then I saw, as if the sun broke through the cloud
the man who'd walked beside us on the way
And as if the sun arose, chased away our fears and woes
And he was known to us in breaking bread
In the dying of the day
Then suddenly he was gone, but we felt no longer on our own
For the Lord has risen like the sun and the night has fled away!
Jesus has risen, He's alive! Jesus has risen He's alive
Night has found its end, and the day has come again
Jesus has risen He's alive
Jesus has risen, He's alive! Jesus has risen He's alive
Night has found its end, and the day has come again
Jesus has risen He's alive
